The first OFI BIOREFINERY

The beating heart of Wakonda is the first Opuntia ficus indica biorefinery in the world.

The biorefinery receives fresh cladodes collected in the field and returns various products:

  • The Ofi water from squeezing the cladodes, liquid rich in mineral salts, soluble fibers, antioxidants and vitamins. This product will initially be recovered for irrigation and in the near future it will become the basis of healthy, nutritious and innovative drinks that Wakonda is developing together with its partners.
  • Cladode flour, a product with different applications both in the food industries and in other industries such as bioremediation. Cladode flour is produced thanks to the innovative process developed by Wakonda and using only renewable energy
  • Animal feed, produced in two versions, both with low protein content (around 5%) and with high protein content (around 20-30% depending on the type desired). It is a feed with a low CO2 footprint and low water use, more sustainable than many other feeds available on the market in Europe and allows the expansion of livestock farming in arid areas and/or with impoverished soils.
  • Electricity, with an installed power of 300 kW and continuous production throughout the 24 hours of the day, an advantage compared to variable renewables such as sun and wind
  • Heat, from the co-generator that produces electricity and which is completely reused for the production cycles of the biorefinery, thus achieving energy autonomy in a completely circular perspective
